August is here with the 80th edition of MBE Business Magazine. In August, most of Canada celebrate some sort of holiday on August 1st. With the exception of Quebec, Newfoundland and the Yukon, the holiday is a Civic holiday because the holiday is not mandated as a public holiday but instead it is observed as a public holiday by regional government (provinces) bodies of Canada.
The reason for which the civic holiday is observed is different across the various provinces and territories as they have different origins. It was first started in the City of Toronto as the Toronto City Council introduced it in 1869 as a midsummer holiday for a day of recreation. Since then other parts of Canada followed like in Alberta it is called as a "Heritage Day" and was established in 1974 to recognize and celebrate the cultural heritage of Albertans. In that same year British Columbia established it as a provincial statutory holiday as "British Columbia Day" to celebrate the history, heritage and culture of British Columbia. In Manitoba it is known as Terry Fox Day in honour of the athlete and cancer research activist called Terry Fox and it was established only in 2015. Similarly it is known as the "New Brunswick Day" in New Brunswick started in 1974 and as the "Natal Day" in Nova Scotia started in 1895.
