ISSUE 91 | JUL 2023

June was a rather blah month weather wise. We had our fair share of sunny days mixed in with overcast days which brought with it, some rain as well.

What we didn’t have, were those days of steamy, sticky days where it became almost unbearable to be outside and the only respite from the heat and humidity was the comfort of your own home with the AC cranked to the coolest.

As we turn the calendar to July, the official start of summer was just over a week ago. Canada Day was celebrated on July 1st. On Canada Day, communities across the country host both small and large-scale events, such as parades, fireworks displays, concerts, cultural showcases, and family gatherings.

Canada Day is also known as Dominion Day, which is the birthday of Canada. Our neighbours to the south, the U.S.A., celebrate the Fourth of July. Independence Day is the birthday of their nation. They celebrate and enjoy the freedom that comes with the event that made this day so special. And, they do so in a big way. There are parades and picnics. And of course, there are fireworks at night.

July 7th is the start of The Observance of Hajj. It is a meaningful annual Islamic pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, in Saudi Arabia. Hajj represents a critical aspect of a Muslim's spiritual journey, strengthening their connection with the divine and fostering a sense of unity and equality within the global Islamic community. While individuals in Canada may not travel to Mecca, many Muslim Canadians gather with their loved ones and communities to observe the coinciding Eid al-Adha, or Festival of Sacrifice.

July 30th is the Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year, marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. It falls on the first day of Muharram, the first month of the lunar calendar. The Islamic New Year celebration is not as grand as other Muslim festivals like Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, but it holds significant importance in the Islamic calendar. In Canada, the Islamic New Year is celebrated by the Muslim community through mosque gatherings, praying, and fasting.
