August is here with our 104th edition of the MBE Business Magazine.
For the month of July in southern Ontario, we were either dealing with unbearably hot days or at times, monsoon like conditions where the amount of rain that fell in one day was equivalent to the amount of rain that we would normally see fall in a month. How much rain did we get? Well, basements were flooded, roadways were undriveable and cars were being left stranded when the level of rain rose almost as high as the car window while the drivers were being rescued by emergency personal. When it wasn’t raining, it was stifling hot, almost like walking into a sauna. If your car sat outside in the hot sun all day while you worked, you were greeted with inside car temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius range when your work day ended. Talk about one extreme to the other. Let’s see what August has to offer weather wise?
Some important days for the month of August are as follows: The first Monday in August (August 5th, 2024) is the Civic Holiday. Civic Holiday is widely observed throughout Canada to give residents an opportunity for relaxation and enjoyment with friends and family. This annual event is aimed at promoting wellbeing and fostering a sense of community among the diverse Canadian population. Each province and territory in Canada has its unique name and various reasons to celebrate, but the common theme remains the same - an appreciation for the dedication, hard work, and harmonious living exemplified by Canadians across the country.
Monday August 12th is Tisha B’Av. Tisha B'Av is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem, which occurred centuries apart. The holiday falls on the ninth day of the month of Av in the Jewish calendar and is marked with fasting, mourning, and prayer. In Canada, Tisha B'Av is observed by the Jewish community as an opportunity to reflect on the tragedies of the past and the ongoing struggles faced by the Jewish people.
Monday August 19th is Discovery Day. Discovery Day is a public holiday in Yukon, a territory in the far northwest of Canada. This day commemorates the discovery of gold in the region, which initiated the famed Klondike Gold Rush and led to significant historical and economic developments in the area.
