May is here with our 113th edition of the MBE Business Magazine.
April showers bring May flowers! April didn’t really offer us much of anything. Temperatures were either seasonal or below seasonal. Not a great deal of sunshine. As a matter of fact, as I mentioned, not much of anything. The last few days of the month were rather pleasant temperature wise, but the temperatures are expected to drop and rain is on the way for the first few days of May. Let’s hope that the first few days of May are not an indication of what the rest of the month will be like. Bring on those flowers!!!
Some important days for the month of May are as follows: Many Jewish Canadians celebrate Israel’s independence on Yom Ha’Atzmaut. This year it falls on May 1st. It commemorates when David Ben-Gurion, who was Israel’s first prime minister, publicly read the Israel’s Declaration of Independence on May 14, 1948. According to the Jewish calendar, this was the fifth day of Iyar, the eighth month year, in the year 5708.
Sunday May 11th is Mother’s Day. Many Canadians celebrate Mother’s Day by showing their appreciation for mothers or mother figures by showering them with gifts and treats. The Mother’s Day date in Canada is on the second Sunday of May each year.
Friday May 16th is Lag B'Omer also known as Lag BaOmer coinciding on the 18th day of the month of Iyar in the Jewish calendar. The name of this observance means refers to the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer. This generally is a day of celebration and joy for many Jewish people in Canada because mourning practices that occur during the Omer period are lifted on this date.
Monday May 19th is Victoria Day and National Patriots Day. Victoria Day, is also known as May Two-Four weekend. In some cities, fireworks displays or parades are held to mark Victoria Day. It is a uniquely Canadian celebration, being celebrated nowhere else in the world. National Patriots’ Day (Journée nationale des patriotes) is a statutory holiday in Québec to honor the rebellion against the British in 1837. Coinciding with Victoria Day, it falls on the Monday before May 25th each year. Celebrations include marches and music concerts.
Thursday May 29th is Ascension Day. It is observed in Canada on the 40th day of Easter. It commemorates Jesus Christ's ascension into heaven, according to the New Testament of the Bible.
