October is here with the 94th edition of the MBE Business Magazine.

With Autumn (Fall) officially here, I mentioned last month that summer seem to come and go so quickly and we were hoping that September would prolong the summer. Well that’s exactly what has happened. September has been a beautiful month with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the low to mid 20’s. With morning and evening temperatures on the cool side, you know that summer is ready to pass the torch to autumn. As the leaves change their colours, some of the autumn scenery is quite breathtaking. If you are looking for a family outing, take the kids, pack the car and go to your nearest apple orchard. Apple picking at this time of the year can be quite exhilarating and therapeutic at the same time. There are a few important dates in October that Canadians can look forward to.

October 6th and 7th represents the end and beginning of holidays in the Jewish calendar. The end of the Sukkot festival is called Shemini Atzeret (Oct. 6th) which primarily focuses on thanking God for abundant rainfall. Additionally, it serves as a final opportunity for Jews to express their gratitude to God for a fruitful year before entering the new season. Simchat Torah (Oct. 7th) which translates to "Rejoicing in the Torah," is a joyous and significant Jewish holiday that commemorates the conclusion of one year's Torah reading cycle and the beginning of a new one. In Canada, Simchat Torah is celebrated in much the same way as it is in Jewish communities around the world. Synagogues hold special services where the Torah scrolls are taken out of the Ark and paraded around the sanctuary while being accompanied by singing and dancing.

The second Monday in October is Thanksgiving which falls on the 9th this year. Thanksgiving in Canada is a national holiday that expresses gratitude for a bountiful harvest, and blessings received throughout the year. This celebration serves as an opportunity for Canadians to come together with their families, friends, and loved ones to reflect on all the good fortune in their lives, and to share their thanks for the various aspects of their lives that they cherish.

Immediately following Thanksgiving is World Mental Health Day which is observed annually in Canada on October 10th, with various events and initiatives taking place throughout the nation. Various organizations, including CAMH and Bell's "Let's Talk" initiative, join forces to create opportunities for Canadians to learn more about mental health and wellness, share personal stories, and engage in conversations to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Last but certainly not least, no one can forget what the 31st represents. It’s none other than Halloween where adults can become kids again. Halloween is an annual celebration with roots in ancient pagan and Christian traditions. Festivities involve activities such as trick-or-treating, costume parties, carving pumpkins, and visiting haunted attractions.
