ISSUE 96 | DEC 2023

December is here with the 96th edition of the MBE Business Magazine. As we enter our last month of 2023, with winter arriving on the 21st of this month, we say good bye to November. For us in Southern Ontario, the month of November was neither here nor there. The first few flakes of snow fell towards the end of the month but not enough to leave any accumulation. The temperatures hovered above the freezing mark for most of the month, never really cold enough to wear a winter jacket. Just remember, the start of spring is only 4 months away. Here are a few important dates in December that Canadians can look forward to.

The month starts with World AIDS Day which is observed annually on December 1st. The day honors all of those who have lost their lives to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) and those who are infected with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). The First Sunday of Advent in 2023 begins on December 3rd marking the beginning of the Advent season and it lasts for around 22-28 days before Christmas. Hanukkah, is a Jewish festival lasting eight days. Hanukkah begins at nightfall on the 7th and ends at nightfall on the 15th. The winter solstice, or the first day of winter occurs around December 21st or 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere. It will happen on Saturday 21 at 11.19 p.m. EDT in North America. The winter solstice is usually regarded as the shortest day of the year of actual daylight.

Amidst the chilly winter days, there comes a night called Christmas Eve celebrated every year on December 24th. It is a time when air glitters with hope and the streets are decorated beautifully with twinkling lights marking the beginning of Christmas.

Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. Christmas is a religious, cultural and commercial holiday, a day when most people spend time with family and friends, exchanging gifts and sharing meals. Boxing Day is next which falls the day after Christmas Day. As such it is part of the Christmas celebration and the ongoing festivities. In past years, most retailers would consider Boxing Day one of the best retail days of the year and as a result most shops and businesses would remain open with working holiday hours.

The year ends with New Year's Eve, December 31, which is a major celebration all over the word. Families and friends travel to be together in order to welcome in the New Year. Traditionally, New Year's Eve is a time for parties, fireworks, and merry-making. People count down the last 10 seconds to midnight, before they welcome in the New Year. At the stroke of midnight, everyone wishes everyone a loud “Happy New Year!”
