August is here with our 116th edition of the MBE Business Magazine.
As we enter the home stretch of summer, the unseasonably cold month of May, the unpredictable month of June and the mostly scorching month of July is in our rear view mirror. We’ve experienced all types of weather (minus the snow) this summer. Hopefully August will remind us of what summer is all about. Sunshine and warm temperatures during the day and comfortable temperatures in the morning and night. Before you know it, fall will be here and summer will be, but a distant memory.
Some important days for the month of May are as follows: Friday August 1st is Emancipation Day in Canada. This day commemorates the anniversary of the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which officially came into effect on August 1, 1834, ending slavery in most of the British Empire, including parts of what is now Canada. The day is a time for reflection, education, and celebration of the resilience and contributions of Black communities in Canada.
Sunday August 3rd is Tisha B'Av. Many Jewish Canadians observe this day which is the ninth day of the month of Av in the Jewish calendar. It is a day to remember various events such as the destruction of the First Temple and Second Temple in Jerusalem.
Monday August 4th in Ontario is a Civic holiday. It is a statutory holiday in some provinces and territories but in others it has another legal status. It is often called the August Holiday, Civic Holiday, Provincial Day, or other local names, such as Terry Fox Day in Manitoba. The only provinces which don’t recognize August 4th as some type of holiday are Quebec and the Yukon Territory. Their holidays are the 15th – Quebec - Assumption of Mary and the 18th Yukon - Discovery day.
Tuesday August 12th is World Elephant day. This day brings global attention to the challenges elephants face and the importance of preserving their future. These majestic animals, known for their intelligence and emotional depth, are celebrated on this day with the hope of ensuring they continue to thrive in the wild for generations to come.
