ISSUE 117 | SEP 2025

September is here with our 117th edition of the MBE Business Magazine

What an August we had in southern Ontario. Temperatures returned to seasonal norms, lots of sunshine with warm temperatures during the day and a slight chill in the morning and evening. Who could ask for anything more than that? As we enter September and the final few weeks of summer, we are reminded that fall is right around the corner with cooler temperatures and the leaves slowly but surely changing colours.

Some important dates for the month of September are as follows:

Monday September 1st is Labour Day in Canada. Labour Day, known as la fête du Travail in Québec, is celebrated on the first Monday of September as a public holiday. On this day, many shops, banks, businesses, and government buildings remain closed. First celebrated in 1894, it coincides with Labour Day in the United States.

The evening of September 4th and continuing to the 5th is Mawlid an-Nabi, also known as Eid-e-Milad an-Nabi. Celebrated by many Muslims around the world, both Sunni and Shia, Mawlid an-Nabi commemorates the birth and life of the Prophet Muhammad.

Monday September 22nd is the first day of fall otherwise known as The Autumnal Equinox. This day marks the moment when the sun is directly above the equator while moving from north to south.

Also happening on the 22nd at sundown is Rosh Hashanah and concludes on the 24th. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, a time of prayer, self-reflection, and t’shuvah (repentance). It begins the ten days of Yamim Nora-im (“Days of Awe” or “High Holidays”), culminating with Yom Kippur (the “Day of Atonement”). Observed worldwide with synagogue services and home rituals, the holiday emphasizes reviewing the past year and committing to growth in the year ahead.

Falling on the first day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, which corresponds to September or October, customs associated with the holiday include sounding the shofar, sharing round challah, and eating apples with honey to represent a sweet New Year.

Tuesday September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation also known as Orange Shirt Day. As it is a public holiday, some shops and businesses will be closed, as will public services such as banks, government offices, and Canada Post. It is a day to remember the victims of the Indian residential school system.
