ISSUE 98 | FEB 2024

February is here with the 98th edition of the MBE Business Magazine.

The weather for the month of January was more like an Oreo cookie. The beginning of the month and the end of the month were much the same and the middle of the month was completely different. The beginning and end of the month brought us mild temperatures and very little snow while the middle of the month brought us bitterly cold temperatures and a couple of snow days although not has much as we’ve experienced in previous years. Some important days for the month of February are as follows:

Friday February 2nd is Groundhog Day. The premise is that every year sometime in the morning of this day, a groundhog comes out of its den, and if it sees its shadow on the ground and returns into the hole, that means there will be six more weeks of winter from that date. However, if the groundhog does not see its shadow, and stays out of its hole, it means that spring is near, and will arrive early. Two of the most famous groundhogs are Punxsutawney Phil in the U.S. and Wiarton Willie in Canada.

The day of love or as we call it Valentine's Day is celebrated every year on February 14th and it is also known as Saint Valentine's Day or Feast of Saint Valentine. February has also been known as the month of love and romance for centuries and on the 14th lovers exchange special gifts among themselves like roses, chocolates, or even jewelry. Many people also take the opportunity of this day to declare their affection for their crushes, often disguised as secret admirers.

Wednesday February 14th is also Ash Wednesday which is observed 46 days before Easter Sunday, and it signals the beginning of the forty days of Lent period. Also known as Day of Ashes, Catholics and Christians celebrate this day by focusing on prayer and penance.

Lastly but most importantly, Monday February 19th is Family day. Family Day is observed in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick on the third Monday of February. This holiday celebrates the importance of families and family life to people and their communities. First held in Alberta in 1990, Family Day was proposed by the province's former premier, Don Getty, after his son was arrested for dealing drugs. Although Getty denied any connection, it is believed that this episode motivated him to establish an occasion to counteract what he saw as the erosion of family values in Canadian society.
